Anointing the Sick

Anointing the Sick with Oil

Have you ever taken the time to study why God used anointing oils? I never did until a few years ago, when I started using anointing oils. At first, I was buying any oil, simply if it smelled good, or if I liked the name or recognized the flower/plant.  I had not done my research on the purpose of oils and why anoint. I started buying oils at church conferences and online at Christian websites- they all said, “anointing oil” so I was happy and began using them. It wasn’t until about 2 years later when I was invited to a “Healing Oils of the Bible” class that I really got a revelation of God’s word and what His intent and purpose was. The oil must be medicinal, therapeutic/healing, not a perfume/fragrant oil.

Mark 6:7 “And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.”

Mark 6:12-13 “So they went out and preached that people should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.”

Did you notice that God sent them out two by  two and they anointed the sick with oil? What kind of oil do you think it was? Why did he send them out and have them use oil to heal the sick? Isn’t that interesting. God used his disciples, ordinary people, like you and me, to heal the sick and cast out demons. We too, are called to do the same.

James 5:13-15 “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”

anointing the sick with essential oil

To anoint means to touch, rub, or smear with oil

We find that not only were priests such as Aaron and his sons set aside for the service of God by having the anointing oil poured upon them, but also the same happened with kings. Thus we find that Samuel anointed Saul:

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “Is it not because the LORD has anointed you commander over His inheritance? (1 Samuel 10:1)

The oils we read about in Scripture are not just any essential oil. It was the oil of the plant, the life blood of the plant, the part that brings healing to the body. It was the pure essence of the plant. Essential oils were used from the beginning of time to bring healing physically, mentally, emotionally as well as spiritually. God has not changed his mind in desiring the same for us today. God wants us to use His medicinal oils to bring healing. Essential oils that are pure, unadulterated do not have side effects, whereas all pharmaceutical medicines do.

Do you see a correlation between anointing oils and healing the sick? Do you see this is God’s design for you? Do you have a desire to use His healing oils? If you are using over the counter medicine and desire to use natural, therapeutic grade essential oils, like we read about in God’s Word, then I highly recommend Young Living essential oils.

Great article- but I believe the oils they used and mentioned in the Bible would have been olive oil plain or infused with herbs.

So, what are the oils we should use for anointing?

Carrie Raab January 16, 2013 at 6:37 am

Hey Jenny! Any and all of them… depends on the person’s individual need… what the purpose of the anointing is for. Physical healing, emotional healing, spiritual purposes. Great question! All of the oils have medicinal properties and what they are used for, that is how you know what oil to use. :)

Couldn’t help but think of Rev 22:2 as I read some of your comments
What an amazing God we serve!

Yes, that is one of my favorite verses that I use in regards to healing oils! Love it, Maureen! Thanks for commenting.
