How to Make Lavender Lip Balm
Lavender Lip Balm
I love, love, love, love this recipe! It makes a great lip balm that isn’t sticky!
Lavender essential oil is extremely nourishing to the skin! So this is great for chapped, cracked, or peeling lips. I also like to smear some around my nostrils so my nose doesn’t get chapped from wiping or blowing.
They also make great gifts for the holidays!
This recipe calls for Lavender essential oil. But really, you can use other types too. Although I do caution you regarding citrus oils. They cause increased photosensitivity and therefore could increase the likelihood of sunburns. Also use caution when using “hot” oils that may cause a burning sensation (such as cinnamon or clove). You can still use these, but you may want to reduce the number of drops you add until you are certain that it will not cause any irritation.
Lavender Lip Balm Recipe
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp grated beeswax or beeswax pearls
1 tsp honey
5 drops Young Living lavender essential oil
Lip balm containers (see information below about this)
Bowl of ice water
Step 1. Warm the coconut oil, olive oil, and beeswax in a small, stainless steel pot or bowl. Be sure to warm it on VERY low heat. (You can use a double boiler, if you’d like.) Stir until the beeswax is completely melted.
Step 2. Remove from heat and quickly whisk in the essential oil and colored lipstick (if desired).
Step3. Place the bottom of the bowl into a shallow pan of ice water and continue whisking quickly as you add the honey.
Step 4. Quickly transfer the balm into your lip balm containers by using the syringe. Allow to set for 3 hours.
Information about the Containers
This recipe will make 15 three ml containers of lip balm. The containers I use, I actually found in the bead section of Joann’s Fabric and Craft store. It is a plastic box with 30 small round containers. It’s only $7.99. With a 50% of coupon, it’s less than $4. That’s only 13 cents each! You can’t beat that with a stick! I couldn’t find the exact product at Joann.com that I found in the store, but this is very similar to what I used. If you want them in an actual chapstick case, you can do that as well. I have made it both ways.
Lavender essential oil is very nourishing and healing to the skin. However, many companies that advertise Lavender, actually use Lavandin because it is less expensive to grow. There are no regulations on the essential oil industry. So companies can label the bottle “100% Pure” and it have synthetic fragrances and toxic fillers. A great way to identify this is to see if there’s a warning about consumption on the bottle. If it is truly 100% pure essential oil, then it will be safe enough to ingest.
Back to the Lavandin. Lavandin is irritating to the skin. Putting an irritating essential oil on already chapped lips is never a good idea. You especially don’t want to give it as a gift! It is very important that you know for sure that you can trust the essential oil that you choose.
It needs to be a high enough quality that you can eat it. If it isn’t pure enough to eat, then you shouldn’t be putting it on your lips. Therefore, oils that are for perfume or fragrances only, may actually cause more damage to sore lips. This is because there most likely isn’t any Lavender oil in it. It will contain either Lavandin or synthetic fragrances. Both of which are not going to help you.
A great way to tell is the price. If it is cheap, then it’s not going to be lavender.
Another great way is to look at the ingredients. If it only says “Lavender oil,” then don’t buy it. You want it to give the scientific name, Lavandula angustifolia.
